Historic Barn in the village of Cesar Ritz
Historic barn (Spycher) in Niederwald (Goms, VS), the birthplace of Cesar Ritz, the founder of the Ritz Hotels
The pretty building next to the "castle" (Schloss) in Niederwald VS was once a typical Valais warehouse with a small stable on the ground floor and a storeroom/workshop on the upper floor.
Today, after the careful reconstruction (2010), there is a kitchen-cum-living-room on the upper floor and a bedroom with TV, shower and WC and an additional washbasin on the ground floor.
For two people the barn offers an ideal accommodation to enjoy the togetherness. Especially attractive are also the balcony, from which you have a good view over the whole village, and the small garden with lounge chairs, garden chairs, a table and a big umbrella.
Niederwald lies at 1251 metres above sea level in the region of Goms in the Upper Valais. The village, which nestles compactly on a slope, still looks untouched today - the houses, which are built closely together and arranged one above the other, lead to an effective staggering of the gables and give the village its special character.
Since December 2019 there is a new attraction in Niederwald: The 'Station Ritz' (stationritz.ch) with a bistro, shop (local specialities like cheese, yoghurt, milk, sausages etc.) and a museum (stationritz.ch/ausstellungen).
Niederwald is a quiet village that has retained much of the charm of bygone times. With Cesar Ritz (1850 - 1918, founder of the Ritz Hotels) the village also has its famous personality. His birthplace is very close to the Spycher. The 'castle' next to the old barn, to which the barn has always belonged, was the birthplace of the portrait painter Justin Lorenz Ritz from Valais, whose son was the famous genre painter Raphael Ritz.
The region offers various attractions, in summer it is a perfect place for hiking and for various sports activities (tennis, golf, mountain biking, etc.), in winter it is a popular cross-country skiing and ski destination. In addition, there are various sights in the surrounding area, be it the many traditional villages in Goms, the Binn Valley or the Unesco World Heritage Site Aletsch.
The barn/Spycher is located in the north-eastern, traffic-free part of the village.
On the upper floor of the house is a kitchen-living room with a red kitchenette including a glass ceramic stove, refrigerator and dishwasher, a sofa, a sideboard and a table. Internet/WLAN and a SONOS speaker are also available.
On the ground floor there is a queen size bed with two mattresses, a TV, a full bathroom (shower) and an additional sink in the bedroom area. Heating is provided by a wood stove in the living room. Electric heters are available in all rooms.
Public transport (Matterhorn-Gotthard Railway) and public parking 100 metres away.
Pets are allowed.
Nearby sports facilities: Mountain climbing, Ice skating, Canoeing, Climbing, Mountainbiking, Paragliding, Bike tours, Rafting, Skiing (alpin), Cross-country skiing, Squash, Tennis
